Culinary Arts
Salter College offers many non-credit courses for students interested in learning basic food preparation skills, recertifying for ServSafe or adding to their culinary specialties. Students interested in attending our culinary school in West Boylston, Massachusetts can begin with a program in:
ServSafe Certification – When working in a restaurant or other culinary facility, cleanliness and sanitation are very important. This course provides info on sanitation, pest control and food borne illnesses, along with preparing students for the ServSafe certification exam.
ServSafe Recertification Exam – This course is for students who need to be recertified in ServSafe but do not need to do a full class of review. In this course, students are provided with a study guide, four hours of class time and the recertification exam.
Culinary Basics – Before someone can advance in the culinary arts, they first need the basics. Basic skills – such as knife techniques and lessons in safety – will be practiced, and a variety of dishes will be prepared.
Basic Bread Making – Many people may not know that there are 10 steps in baking. This course will cover those 10 steps, along with the various types of flour and yeast that are used and how they react in baking. Students will also bake many types of bread and rolls.
Spa Cuisine/Healthier Cooking – Healthy eating isn’t always easy, but it is important. This course teaches students the basics of the food pyramid and how to adapt our diets to a healthier way of eating. Students will also practice making recipes from renowned spas across the United States.
Cake Decorating – Cake decorating involves a variety of materials, ingredients and techniques. This course will teach students techniques in borders, flowers and decorative chocolate work that will then be used on their own cake production.
